NANAIMO — Long-term care homes in Nanaimo are now COVID-19 free.

Island Health announced on Monday, March 1, the ongoing outbreak at Eden Gardens long-term care home was over following no further transmission of the coronavirus.

One staff member initially tested positive, causing the outbreak to be declared on Feb. 14. A resident who was a confirmed contact of the staff member tested positive one day later.

Social visits resumed Monday, with admissions and transfers also back underway.

Residents are being allowed to dine together for the first time since the outbreak was declared.

As of Feb. 19, 118 out of the 130 residents at Eden Gardens had elected to receive the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

A similar percentage also received the shot at Wexford Creek long-term care home, which ended its outbreak on Saturday, Feb. 27

Data from public health shows case counts among residents and staff in long-term care plummeted around 12 days after receiving the vaccine.
