VIU expanding in-demand community mental health worker program

NANAIMO — Vancouver Island University has recognized the need for more community mental health workers.

The university has expanded the program to two cohorts instead of one, meaning it now runs year round through online learning with up to 28 students in each cohort.

Program seminar instructor Doug Carter told NanaimoNewsNOW they can’t train community mental health workers fast enough.

“There’s a need for a lot of frontline, hands-on help. You can see on the job boards for Nanaimo and the area there’s lots of positions advertised. This program helps meet the need.”

Carter said working with at-risk youth, seniors and those with developmental challenges are the major fields community mental health workers are often employed in.

“We have a practicum at the end of the program and there are lots of agencies willing to support students,” Carter said.

Each student earns a certificate after the 26 week program, which is recognized by Island Health. The health authority said many more positions are anticipated throughout the central Vancouver Island region.

Carter said a wide range of students apply and thrive in the program.

“Some people in the program have had problems themselves in the past and now want to turn it around and help others. There are a lot of people coming in who already have other degrees and want to get more practical, hands-on experience.”

Applications are now open for the expanded program, which starts March 15, 2021.
