New COVID-19 cases in Island Health back in single digits

NANAIMO — The number of new COVID-19 cases within Island Health has fallen from the lofty highs of late November.

Eight new cases were confirmed by the province for Island Health on Friday, Dec. 11. This was the second time this week new cases were in the single digits. Five were announced on Wednesday. New cases on Tuesday and Thursday were 10 and 11, respectively.

The average of the three day reporting period from the weekend before was 15.

The number of new cases in mid-December is a sharp contrast from late November, when the record for most new cases within Island Health was broken on Nov. 27 with 27 new cases.

The number of active cases in Island Health dropped significantly, from 161 to 105. Roughly 100 people have recovered from COVID-19 in the last four days in Island Health.

Island Health’s eight new cases were among the 737 confirmed by the province for all of B.C.

A majority of the cases were once again in the Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health regions.

Island Health remained the least affected of B.C.’s health authorities by a wide margin.

Nearly 9,600 cases are considered active in B.C.

A further 11 people passed away due to COVID-19 in B.C., the lowest so far this week.

Nearly 30 people died the day before.
