PARKSVILLE — A fast-acting employee took a punch in the face, but managed to help police track down a man accused of robbery.

Oceanside RCMP allege on Nov. 19 at about 11:15 p.m. an employee leaving work at the Beach Club Resort on the Island Hwy. Spotted a man cutting bike locks in front of the business.

Cpl. Jesse Foreman said the employee knew the two bikes the man was attempting to steal belonged to the resort.

“He confronted the man and was subsequently punched in the face, then the man dropped one of the bikes and rode off on another one.”

Cpl. Foreman said the victim provided police with a solid suspect description, allowing Mounties to track down alleged assailant on the nearby waterfront.

He was allegedly dissembling the stolen bike.

Taylor Lee Carrigan was arrested and later charged with a count of robbery.

Foreman said Carrigan is slated to make his next court appearance on Dec. 18 in Nanaimo.

Foreman recommends Good Samaritans be careful about how they deal with people committing crimes.

“In this case a very good description was given, that’s what we needed to get this guy. That’s all we needed, we don’t want anyone confronting anyone else and getting hurt.”

Court records show Carrigan is slated to go on trial in February for an assault with a weapon charge in relation to an incident in Parksville this past April.

He’s not in custody.
