NANAIMO — Local police officers continue to deal with excessive speed on Nanaimo highways, even as the days get shorter and the weather becomes worse.

A driver travelling southbound on the Nanaimo Parkway near Cedar Rd. around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 26 was pulled over by Nanaimo RCMP for going 178 kilometres per hour in a 90 zone.

Cst. Gary O’Brien said officers are getting tired of pulling cars off the road for travelling at dangerous speeds.

“Once again the driver’s apologetic, once again the driver made no excuses and once again his vehicle is towed for seven days and gets a $483 fine.”

The officer who pulled the car over is solely responsible for catching 32 vehicles for excessive speed in all parts of the city.

O’Brien said there are no excuses for travelling so fast.

“You have to slow down, the roads are bad, the visibility is limited, the roads are wet and it’s perfect conditions for having a terrible accident.”

Fall and winter conditions routinely see highways dip close to the freezing mark, particularly with changes in elevation.

Police say wet roads and cold temperatures make for a dangerous mix, creating tracherous conditions for drivers.
