Island Health COVID-19 case counts continue double digit climb

NANAIMO — Island Health’s COVID-19 curve continues to bend decidedly up.

A total of 17 new cases were part of Friday’s update from public health and the province, bringing the total number of infections to 446 since the start of the pandemic.

Across the health authority, 128 cases are currently active with approximately two-thirds (85) in the central Island region which includes Nanaimo and Oceanside.

A majority of recent cases in Island Health are labeled as being linked to existing cases or clusters, according to data from the health authority. Secondary infection sources stem from community exposures.

Provincially, 516 new cases were confirmed Friday with 7,122 currently active in all health authorities.

The number of hospitalizations grew to 227, 57 of whom are receiving intensive care. Three people are currently hospitalized within Island Health including one patient in ICU.

Ten people also passed away in the province in the last 24 hours as a result of COVID-19 complications, bringing the B.C. death total to 331.

So far, B.C. has seen over 25,000 cases of the coronavirus with nearly 17,500 people recovered from the virus.

Sweeping new regulations and restrictions were imposed by the province on Thursday including mandatory masks in public indoor spaces and a ban on social gatherings.
