NANAIMO — Police say a notable amount of fentanyl is no longer on Nanaimo streets and tainting the drug supply.

The Vancouver Island Emergency Response Team carried out a search warrant on a home in the 1200 block of Nanaimo Lakes Rd on Nov, 6.

Police confiscated six ounces of fentanyl along with smaller amounts of cocaine and methamphetamine, $12,000 in cash and three unloaded shotguns. It’s the third drug bust in the Nanaimo area where significant amounts of drugs and cash were found since Halloween.

Cst. Gary O’Brien said efforts made to take fentanyl off the street saves lives.

“Some people think a seizure of six ounces is nothing, but that’s significant in our community. We know a majority of these drugs are destined for marginalized people on our streets and it’s killing them.”

Tasha Leone, 48, and Kyle Busch, 28, both from Nanaimo were arrested and remain in custody.

They’re charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and careless storage of a firearm.

“Our members are realistic,” O’Brien said. “They recognize it’s a good job getting dope off the street but they know to other drug dealers are going to take advantage of that. While these two are cooling their jets in jail, others are going to step up and start providing the drugs.”

Both Leone and Busch are currently before the courts on similar drug charges.
