Newest Clipper helps sink former teammates in Island Cup action

Nov 10, 2020 | 1:36 PM

NANAIMO — A new Clipper defenceman made his presence felt against his old club over the weekend.

Moe Acee became a Clipper on Nov. 6 and helped his new team to a 3-1 victory over his old team, the Alberni Valley Bulldogs on the same day.

Acee spent all of the 2019-20 season in Alberni Valley where he conceded the Clippers were the Bulldogs biggest rival.

“We always had tight games and we had to play with an edge against them. Being a Clipper it’s going to make this rivalry much more thrilling for myself personally.”

The win in Alberni Valley was Nanaimo’s only game of the week and raised the Clippers Island Cup record to 7-4.

With three games left in the Island Division’s return to play tournament the Clippers are three points behind the first place Victoria Grizzlies.

Nanaimo coach Darren Naylor said even though the current games are technically exhibition contests that’s not the way he’s been treating it.

“As coaches we’re competitive people and we want to win everything we possibly can. It doesn’t stop now, we want to keep going and track down Victoria.”

CLIP NOTES:

Forward Tim Washe scored a goal in his return to the Nanaimo line up from a two game suspension on Nov. 6.

Defenceman Gianni Fairbrother will serve the second game of a two suspension on Nov. 10 when the Clippers play in Alberni Valley.

Defenceman Moe Acee and forward Matt Nastasiuk made their Clipper debuts on Nov. 6.

The BCHL has cancelled seven games between Nov. 13 and Nov. 21 in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley because of COVID-19 restrictions. Nanaimo’s remaining exhibition games will go ahead as planned.

The BCHL has confirmed the 2020-2021 regular season be 32 games played within regional cohorts. It will start in early December and run through the end of March. The Wenatchee Wild is not currently included in the schedule.
