New electric buses for SD68 to jumpstart modernizing fleet

NANAIMO — A new era of bus transportation is right around the corner for Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools.

Two 76-passenger electric buses are expected to arrive for District 68 in January, with most of the $900,000 bill covered by provincial grants.

District 68 secretary-treasurer Mark Walsh said planning to transition to zero emission vehicles over the next several years is a huge step forward.

“To be able to transition to an electric fleet will have an enormous impact on our greenhouse gas emissions as a district.”

Walsh said it’s anticipated the two new buses will combine for fuel and maintenance savings of $20,000 annually for the district.

“The research that the facilities department, in conjunction with the ministry, suggests they’re very reliable,” Walsh said.

He noted SD68 will work with multiple partners to determine the impact charging buses has on the power grid. The project includes a charging station.

“As we move the public sector to a more electric world, what are the impacts, benefits and challenges that hydro is going to have? We’re looking forward to partnering with them as well.”

It hasn’t been determined which routes will receive the new buses upon their expected arrival in the new year.

The electric buses will also have seat belts and other safety features including interior and exterior cameras as part of a pilot project.
