Charges laid in Makayla Chang murder investigation

NANAIMO — A person of interest in the tragic murder of a Nanaimo teen is now officially charged.

Nanaimo RCMP announced a charge of first degree murder was laid against Steven Michael Bacon.

Bacon was never officially listed as a suspect in the case of missing teen Makayla Chang, though police did specify Chang may have been with him and was a person of interest.

His house was searched and investigators did speak to him in late summer 2017, before Chang’s body was found in May.

Bacon later left the area and was found in Ontario.

In early January, 2020 Bacon was arrested for a charge in Fredriction, NB unrelated to Chang’s death.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW bringing Bacon to justice for allegedly murdering the 16-year-old is a community effort.

So many people came forward to assist and this first degree murder charge would not be possible without the assistance of a multitude of people and businesses,” O’Brien said.

“Upwards of 200 police officers at any given time were working on this file across Canada within the RCMP and municipal jurisdictions.

No date is yet set for his Bacon’s first appearance in court.
