Island Health COVID-19 case count grows heading into September long weekend

NANAIMO — The Island Health region ended another week of the COVID-19 pandemic with two additional cases.

The new, active cases bring the health authorities total to 180 and are part of 121 new cases confirmed across B.C.

Thirty-one people are currently in hospital, of whom 12 are in intensive care units. The remainder of the 1,233 active cases in the province are recovering at home. Seven cases are active in the Island Health region.

Public health continues to actively monitor almost 2,800 people on a daily basis, a result of known exposure to a confirmed positive COVID-19 case. There are 6,162 total cases in B.C. during the pandemic.

“COVID-19 continues to affect our province and this long weekend is no different. Whether you’re celebrating the Canucks game tonight or meeting friends for a barbecue or camping, let’s make it a safe, small-group long weekend,” a joint statement from the province read.

One additional fatality was reported by the province Friday, the 211th person to pass away from COVID-19 complications.

The number of COVID-19 cases has increased exponentially in the summer months.

British Columbia reported its 2,000th case on April 28.

By July 8, the 3,000th case was confirmed by the province with the time between milestones decreasing.

The 4,000th case was confirmed a month later on Aug. 9 with the 5,000 mark hit less than two weeks later on Aug. 22.

On Thursday, Sept. 3 the province had its 6,000th confirmed case.

The Island Health region is the lowest rate of transmission of COVID-19 in British Columbia, according to data released from the province Thursday.
