NANAIMO — The slow and steady increase of COVID-19 cases on Vancouver Island has taken a break.

A joint statement from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix on Tuesday, July 28 confirmed the total number of COVID-19 cases within the Island Health region remains at 143.

The most recent data from the BC CDC showed there are currently 9 active cases on the Island.

The statement announced 23 new cases across the province and one new fatality in the Vancouver Coastal Health region.

Nearly 200 people have passed away from the respiratory virus in B.C.

No new community outbreaks were announced, as public health teams grapple with recent outbreaks in Abbotsford, Haida Gwaii and the Kelowna region.

“As we all look ahead to the upcoming B.C. Day long weekend, let’s ensure it is a safe weekend for all of us. Whether it is enjoying the local parks, staying at a vacation rental or out for dinner, keeping our groups small and maintaining safe distances will protect ourselves and those around us,” the statement said.

The recently amended order on gatherings means those in rental accommodations can have a maximum of five visitors and must record everyone’s information to help contact tracing if required.
