NANAIMO — The number of total cases of COVID-19 on Vancouver Island has crept upwards.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry confirmed one new case of the virus within the Island Health region since Friday, July 24.

There are currently 10 active cases out of 143 total.

She confirmed 81 new cases across B.C. since Friday, as outbreaks continue in the Okanagan and Haida Gwaii.

Fifteen new cases stem from a blueberry packing plant in the Abbotsford area.

Dr. Henry also announced two additional fatalities.

The order of mass gatherings was amended to limit the number of guests at short-term rentals, hotels and cabins, as she’d signalled last week, to a maximum of five visitors.

Owners must now also collect the contact information of everyone who visits, to better contact trace if necessary.
