No new COVID cases confirmed for Vancouver Island as state of emergency extended

NANAIMO — A new case of COVID-19 hasn’t been confirmed on Vancouver Island for three weeks.

A joint statement from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix on Wednesday, May 27 said the number of active or resolved cases on Vancouver Island remains at 127.

The Island Health region has not had a local case since May 8, with the only additions to the region’s case total coming from data corrections or errors.

One person remains in hospital regionally.

Across B.C., nine new cases were confirmed, bringing the provincial total to 2,550 with 244 active cases.

Earlier on Wednesday, public safety minister Mike Farnworth extended the provincial state of emergency as the restart B.C. plan continues.

“As businesses work hard to safely reopen their doors and friends and families carefully expand their social bubbles, we are beginning to see what this global challenge will look like in B.C.,” Farnworth said in a release.

The state of emergency will continue until June 9, at which point the government could extend it again or end it.

The measure gives the province more power to ensure supply chains and critical items needed to combat COVID-19 are available.

Premier John Horgan said in a Wednesday news conference this is the longest state of emergency in B.C.’s history “with likely no end in sight.”
