Vancouver Island starts month of May with 121 confirmed COVID-19 cases, more than 90 recovered

NANAIMO — The number of active or resolved cases of COVID-19 on Vancouver Island continues to climb steadily.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced one new case on the Island in Friday, May 1 news release.

This brings the total to 121 cases on Vancouver Island since the first case was identified on March 11.

Data from the BC CDC showed five people are currently in hospitals on the island but none are receiving intensive care.

Throughout the pandemic, a total of 24 people were hospitalized due to the respiratory virus in the Island Health region.

There were four fatalities regionally.

Ninety-two people have recovered, meaning roughly 25 per cent of Vancouver Island’s total cases are active.

Across B.C., Dr. Henry announced a further 33 new cases of COVID-19 for 2,145.

“We are saddened to report one new COVID-19 related death in the Fraser Health region, for a total of 112 deaths in British Columbia,” the release said. “We offer our condolences to everyone who has lost their loved ones.”

1,357 people who had tested positive for COVID-19 have recovered.
