Nanaimo RCMP K9 Jager retrieves donation and brings smiles to NRGH

NANAIMO — The emergency room at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital had an unusual visitor.

The Nanaimo RCMP police service dog Jager paid hospital staff a visit for some affection from staff and also to pick up a much needed donation.

Sherry Volk, donation organizer and nursing unit assistant, helped raise $700 for the charity Ned’s Wish.

The charity assists police service dogs after they’ve retired.

“These dogs go through some horrific incidents,” she told NanaimoNewsNOW. “They suffer traumas just like humans do. When they retire, there’s no pension for them and often ongoing medical needs.”

Since 2016, Ned’s Wish has helped dogs across Canada receive wheelchairs for mobility, specialized food and medication.

“We get that dogs are a huge part of protecting and serving in our community and we wanted to do something to help them out,” Volk said.

It’s hoped the fundraiser will become an annual event at NRGH.
