Community groups offering tree chipping services for dried Christmas trees

NANAIMO — Several local non-profit and volunteer organizations are hosting events to help Nanaimo residents responsibly dispose of their Christmas tree.

Trees can be dropped off and chipped at a number of locations in the city on Saturday Jan. 4 and Sunday Jan. 5 for a small fee, with all proceeds going to different community organizations.

BC SPCA Nanaimo Branch – Jan. 4 and Jan. 5 – 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Brooks Landing Mall (next to Staples)

Nanaimo Search and Rescue – Jan. 4 and Jan. 5 – 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Country Club Mall (near Dairy Queen)

Volunteer Nanaimo – Jan. 4 and Jan. 5 – 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Real Canadian Superstore (6435 Metral Drive)

Nanaimo Lions Club – Jan. 4 and Jan. 5 – 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Nanaimo North Town Centre (south parking lot near old Sears location)

Nanaimo Fish & Game Junior Club – Jan. 4 and Jan. 5 – 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Dried Christmas trees pose a major fire risk in the days and weeks following Christmas.

According to the National Fire Prevention Association, tree lights becoming too warm for dried branches cause of almost half of Christmas tree related fires.

Candles or portable heaters make up a quarter of all related fires, while 21% are intentionally lit.
