GABRIOLA — A small plane crash landed on Gabriola Island at around 6:00 p.m. Tuesday evening, killing multiple people on board.

The Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash and will be on the scene on Wednesday, Dec. 11.

Residents reported on social media that a loud bang was heard in the Twin Beaches area on the north west tip of the Island.

One Gabriola resident told NanaimoNewsNOW the plane went down near an empty lot before crashing in shallow water along the shoreline.

Neighbours to the crash reported to him they saw flames shoot high in the sky. Other residents that posted about the crash on social media reported an explosion around the time of the crash.

Flight radar from Tuesday evening shows a plane travelling from the south before turning back towards Nanaimo and eventually losing radar contact.

Several RCMP and BC Ambulance personnel travelled to Gabriola on the 6:25 p.m. ferry to assist local authorities in recovery and the investigation.
