Life-threatening injuries for woman struck at Harewood intersection

NANAIMO — A 24-year-old woman has been airlifted to hospital in Victoria with life-threatening injuries after being hit at a notorious Harewood intersection.

Nanaimo RCMP said the woman was hit by a vehicle while she crossed Albion St. and Bruce Ave. on Monday Nov. 11 at about 8:40 p.m.

The driver of the vehicle, a 31-year-old woman, is believed to have not seen the victim at the unlit crosswalk. Police noted the pedestrian was wearing dark, non-reflective clothing and may have been using a pair of earbud headphones that were recovered at the scene.

RCMP have seized the vehicle involved, a newer model Dodge Aries, and it is scheduled to undergo an inspection to determine any mechanical faults. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW roads conditions were wet and slick from continued rain, which also caused a visually impairing glare.

“It is quite a bad crosswalk because it’s down a hill on a certain grade and extremely hard to see at this time of year,” O’Brien said.

An investigation into the incident is continuing.
