LANTZVILLE — A serious multi-vehicle collision on Highway 19 at the intersection of Ware Rd has sent at least one person to hospital and caused traffic chaos.

RCMP say Tuesday at 10:45 a.m. a semi truck appeared to rear end the back of a car in the southbound lanes at the intersection.

The truck then went up Ware Road and tipped over into the ditch.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said one woman in the car was airlifted to hospital in Victoria, while two male passengers were transported to NRGH.

O’Brien said the driver of the semi-truck had to be extricated from the cab before he was then transported to Nanaimo hospital for treatment.

“Traffic analysts are on scene. A number of people cooperated and provided dash cam video, which has been very helpful.”

Drive BC announced the highway re-opened at 5 p.m.

The highway was closed to southbound traffic for nearly six hours causing frustration for thousands of commuters.

Callers to NanaimoNewsNOW reported southbound traffic was backed up all the way to Parksville at times Wednesday afternoon.

Main arteries through upper and lower Lantzville were heavily congested Wednesday by re-routed traffic through Superior Rd.
