‘Person of interest’ in Makayla Chang investigation again sought by Nanaimo RCMP

NANAIMO — More than two years after the investigation began, Nanaimo RCMP are once against asking for the public’s help in finding a person of interest.

A release asking for assistance in locating Stephen Michael Bacon, 59, was sent out on Monday, Aug. 12. He was originally listed as a “person of interest” in the case when Makayla Chang first disappeared in March, 2017.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said their view of Bacon hasn’t changed.

“He has information, he was one of the first people we spoke to. Of course, this has been an ongoing investigation and we’re at the point now where we need to revisit and have another conversation with him.”

Bacon was originally found by officers in Ontario back in April 2017. He was released after being questioned.

“It was our understanding he may have been headed to the Montreal area,” O’Brien said. “No one has been able to confirm that.”

Additional photos were shared by Nanaimo RCMP.

One, featuring Bacon with a shaved head and blue rain jacket, was taken in Sudbury, Ontario. The other, showing him with travelling gear, was taken in Nanaimo.

O’Brien said it’s possible Bacon has returned to Vancouver Island.

He is roughly five-foot-10 and 200 pounds with grey hair. He has a distinctive tear drop tattoo under his left eye.

Bacon may be using aliases such as Michael Dufour, Steven Michael or Mike Jannis.

Anyone who sees Bacon is urged to call Nanaimo RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
