Nanaimo Lions Club looks to reinvigorate pavilion in Maffeo Sutton Park

NANAIMO — A major landmark in downtown Nanaimo is set for a facelift.

The City of Nanaimo has issued a request for proposals for a mural on the bottom skirting of the Nanaimo Lions Pavilion in Maffeo Sutton Park.

Longtime Lion’s Club member Bob Rowledge told NanaimoNewsNOW the pavilion is used in some way nearly every day and the organization is keen to give it a visual upgrade.

“It’s going to be a special project and extra case has to be taken,” Rowledge said.

Given it’s central location, Rowledge said the pavilion is often marked with graffiti and they hope no one will deface the new mural.

The request for proposal said artwork submissions should demonstrate “imagination, originality, excellence and artistic merit” on a theme of Nanaimo’s oceanfront culture and harbour.

Since building the pavilion in 2001, Rowledge said it’s become an iconic part of Maffeo Sutton Park and he hopes to see its popularity grow.

Any submitted designs will be adjudicated by the Lions Club and City of Nanaimo staff.

Details of the request can be found online.
