Jul 9, 2019 | 5:08 AM

UPDATE: Highway 4 at Kennedy Lake re-opened to alternating traffic at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the province.

A more than 14-hour closure in both directions was caused by several large boulders which blocked the highway in both directions, according to the ministry of transportation and infrastructure.

A ministy official told NanaimoNewsNOW blasting by contractors caused the rocks to fall onto Highway 4 east of Ucluelet unexpectedly overnight.

The next scheduled closure is between 5 and 7 a.m. as crews continue an extensive highway improvement project in the area.
