NANAIMO — Five Nanaimo Track and Field Club athletes are provincial champions.

They won provincial titles at the BC Masters Championship in Langley over the weekend, competing against nearly 900 other athletes.

Nanaimo Masters competitors earned six gold, four silver, and five bronze medals in their 35-and-older
age categories.

Phillip Vannini won gold in both discus and shot put in the 40-44 age group.

His 39.01m discus throw ranks 19th in Canada among all ages.

Competing in the 65-69 age range, Sven Donaldson brought home gold in high jump and pole vault.

Club mate Tim Hendrie finished second behind Donaldson in high jump.

Nola Hendrie had a tremendous weekend with a gold in the pole vault, silver in discus and long jump and bronze in the shot put and hammer throw.

She dominated the 60-64 age bracket.

Ronald Bannister ran 800 m to earn a gold medal in his first year of competition in the 50-54 age group.

Marc Paris (50-54), also in his first season in Masters, took home a silver medal in the 100m. Denise Bonin (60-64) earned bronze in the 100m and 200m, while another rookie Win Myint (40-44) finished third in the men’s 200m.

Nanaimo’s Isabella Bortolotto was one of four Canadians chosen by Major League Baseball to attend the 2019 Girls Baseball Breakthrough Series.

The four day event has just wrapped up at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Florida.

More than 60 athletes ages 17 and under from Canada, the United States, Puerto Rico, and Belgium took part.

On the field the players received instruction from former MLB athletes Dmitri Young, Lou Collier and Fernando Arroyo, as well as members of women’s U.S. national team.

The purpose of the Breakthrough Series is to help open doors for players looking to advance to the next level.

The Nanaimo Diamonds U16B girls fastball team won the District 2 Championship.

They beat out the Alberni Valley Blazers and Oceanside Rage by going 3-0 over the weekend while outscoring their opponents 27-3.

The girls will now represent the district at the U16B Provincial Championships in North Delta from July 12 to 14.
