Nanaimo RCMP officers disappointed but not shocked after speeding bust

May 28, 2019 | 4:07 AM

NANAIMO — Police say they’re disheartened but not surprised after a large speed trap in a notorious section of highway found people driving nearly 150 kilometres per hour in an 80-zone.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said seven excessive speeders were caught between 6:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Monday, May 27 heading northbound on Highway 19 at Ware Rd. The lowest recorded speed of the seven was 125 kilometres per hour.

The highest was 148 kilometres per hour.

O’Brien said Nanaimo RCMP traffic officers are no longer ever surprised by the reckless speeds they see on Nanaimo highways.

“The public needs to realize it’s totally unacceptable. You will lose your vehicle and receive a significant fine if you continue to drive like this.” Gary O’Brien

O’Brien said the high speeds are especially concerning given the number of crashes which have happened in the area.

“You may feel comfortable driving at that speed, but if a car beside you decides to cut in front, or a deer crosses the highway, you’re going to have absolute carnage.”

O’Brien said both the Lantzville Flats and Trans-Canada Hwy. near the Nanaimo Airport are the two locations with the most cases of speeding.
