Bastion Bridge closure takes effect Tuesday

NANAIMO — A key link to and from downtown Nanaimo is now closed to vehicular traffic for several weeks while crews upgrade the Bastion St. Bridge.

The City said the closure will be in effect from Tuesday, May 21 to June 28 to replace the concrete bridge deck of the link between the Old City Quarter and the heart of downtown.

Pedestrians will still be able to cross the bridge during the deck replacement portion of the project, which also involves seismic improvements.

Wayfinding signage to help guide tourists will also be added.

Service interruptions began in early April when the transit exchange at the corner of Fitzwilliam St. and Prideaux St. moved to 1 Port Dr. across from the Port Place Shopping Centre.

City staff expect the improvements will extend the life of the Bastion St. Bridge by another 20 to 30 years.

The well-used bridge was originally built in 1936 and retrofitted in 1978, according to the City.
