NANAIMO — The Mid Isle Mariners are on the field to start the Pacific Coast Soccer League Season.

The Mariners start on the road in a matchup against their island rivals the Victoria Highlanders.

In 2018, the two teams finished second and third in the PCSL standings.

Both earned six wins but the Highlanders had more points with two extra draws during the season.

Coach Matt Harnett said he’s excited to start against Victoria after being a Highlander himself for six years.

The Mariners are also drawing significantly from the Nanaimo pool of players.

“We have a very strong tie this year to both VIU and Nanaimo United. We have two from Nanaimo United and several generations of VIU players, as well as four players from the national championship team.”

The Mariners tune up for the PCSL season at Merle Logan Field

The schedule features a road heavy start with with three straight away matches. Further down the road the Mariners end the season with five straight home games.

The 2019 home opener is Saturday, June 1 at Merle Logan Field.

Coach Arnett said the team will make sure to put on an entertaining show.

“I’m not about just sitting back and defending and launching it forward,” Arnett explained. “It’ll be a very attractive brand of football. A brand that a lot of these guys have played and do play right now with their current teams, so it will be very fast.”

As for expectations Arnett believed the Mariners are a playoff team who will vie for a top two spot by the end of the PCSL campaign.
