Hundreds of motocross riders to hit Nanaimo race track

May 10, 2019 | 9:30 AM

NANAIMO – Nearly 300 racers will cruise along the Wastelands in Nanaimo this weekend for an Island-wide motocross championship.

The VIMX Race Series will dominate the track on Weigles Rd. It’s the first of three stops in Nanaimo throughout the summer in the series.

Roughly 100 riders are from Nanaimo, ages four to 64 with men and women competitors.

Local Vancouver Island pros like Joey Parkes, Ryan Lalonde, and Jason Abernethy will be in the mix alongside prominent riders like Casey Keast from Kelowna and Kyle Springman from Abbotsford.

Many local riders took advantage of the track Tuesday for the last night of training.

The weekend event is being put on in conjunction with Future West Moto, which organizers said will give it a wider draw than most Vancouver Island races.

Riders will practice starting 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 11 with races all the next day.

With the track opening up to ATV’s and other joys like an outdoor RC car track and airbag jump, Nanaimo Motocross president Ken Parkes said the Wastelands isn’t just a place for motocross anymore.

Motocross, and ATV and RC racing are all hosted at the Wastelands site in Nanaimo

The weekend is the highlighted event on the Nanaimo Motocross calendar but another another Vancouver Island series event goes next month on Father’s Day weekend.

More information about this weekend’s racing is available on Facebook and the association website.
