Dominic LeBlanc taking leave from cabinet to battle new cancer
OTTAWA — Dominic LeBlanc is stepping away temporarily from his duties as federal intergovernmental and northern affairs minister after being diagnosed with a type of blood cancer.
“A few weeks ago, I consulted with my doctor for what began as flu-like symptoms,” the veteran New Brunswick Liberal MP said in a joint statement Friday with Dr. Nicholas Finn, his hematologist-oncologist.
“After a series of tests, my doctor has diagnosed me with a form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.”
The 52-year-old said he’s already begun treatment, which will last “several weeks.” He said he looks forward to resuming his cabinet duties once treatment is concluded and still intends to run for re-election this fall in his riding of Beausejour, which he has held since 2000.
