Clippers fall 5-2 to Powell River

NANAIMO — The Clippers faced a team that is quickly becoming their nemesis on Saturday.

The Powell River Kings beat the Clippers 5-2 at Frank Crane Arena, and it was the third straight victory the Kings have recorded over Nanaimo this season.

A deflection goal by Mitchell Williams gave the Kings a 1-0 lead after the first period and they extended that to 2-0 on an early second period tally by Ryan Brushett.

The Clippers answered that goal with a breakaway effort by Gunnar Wegleitner who scored in his second game since being acquired in a trade earlier in the week.

Matt Fawcett continued the second period scoring parade with a shot that banked in off a defender, before Ben Berard snapped home a power play goal to up the lead to 4-1.

That goal was scored during a blow to the head major penalty assessed to the Clippers Blake Bonnar. 

Kyler Kovich scored has second goal of the season on a rebound in the final minute of the second to narrow the gap to 4-2 heading to the intermission break.

The middle period was one of the more entertaining of the season with five goals being exchanged and the shots finishing 18-16 for Nanaimo.

Offense was harder to come by in the third as the only goal came on a late opportunity by Matt Rickard when he jumped off the point to beat Landon Pavlisin for the 5-2 marker.

The final shots were 37-26 for the Kings with Mitch Adamyk getting the win in net.

Powell River finished 1/5 on the man advantage while the Clippers were 0/3 on the night.

Saturday’s Three Stars were Ben Berard 1g 2a, Kyler Kovich 1g, and Ryan Brushett 1g 1a.

The Clippers are off until Sunday October 7th when they host the Trail Smoke Eaters at 2 p.m.
