Blood donors urgently needed in Nanaimo

NANAIMO — The amount of available blood supply for hospitals is at dire levels and Canadian Blood Services hopes Nanaimo residents will do their part to help.

Ann Chabert, a territory manager with the service, says the two upcoming clinics on Tuesday, Aug. 29 and Wednesday, Aug. 30, are critical.

“It’s getting close to the beginning of the school year, everyone’s getting ready to move back to college or university and in the last weekend with barbeques and family, they forget about blood donation, the clinics and the needs of every patient in the hospital.”

Chabert said long weekends like the upcoming Labour Day weekend are especially important given the number of travel accidents which happen and blood is in higher demand.

There are more than 200 appointments open on Aug. 29 and 30 at Beban Park Social Centre from 12 to 7 p.m. each day.

“It’s really a heroic act to donate,” Chabert said. “Every blood that we take from our mobile clinics here on the Island are on a ferry the same night, they go straight to the lab and within five days they’ll be at a hospital serving one to three patients in the province.”

Appointments can be made online or by phone.
