Nanaimo’s new ‘top cop’ brings unique skill set to role

NANAIMO — The new man in charge of the Nanaimo RCMP took a unique route to get there.

Supt. Cameron Miller was officially hired last week, after replacing Mark Fisher, who took a job with the RCMP’s provincial headquarters in Winnipeg.

Before policing, Miller used his honours degree in commerce to work in Toronto as a Bay Street financial analyst for a mining company.

Miller says he’s had some interesting, fast-paced jobs in his 22 years with the RCMP.

“I was responsible for the financial crime portfolio for the RCMP and I was one of Canada’s representatives on the International Anti-Corruption Task Force,” says Miller.

Miller has an extensive background in fighting various white-collar crimes, from counterfeiting to anti-corruption and stock market fraud.

For the past year-and-a-half, Miller has served with the Nanaimo RCMP detachment in a senior management role as operations support officer.

Miller sees strong community collaboration as an integral part of how to improve public safety.

“Working with the community as a whole in making Nanaimo a safer place, those are one of the key priorities, is helping the community, making a safer place to live, to work and to be.”
