Government delays hold up anti-erosion project in Parksville

Plans to fight beach erosion this summer along Parksville’s waterfront are being washed away.

City of Parksville’s senior engineering technologist Fred Pakala says it’s very unlikely that the city’s anti-erosion project at Arbutus Point near the hovercraft pad will go ahead this summer as planned.

“The City is currently experiencing a short timeline, and Department of Fisheries and Oceans has approved July and August construction but the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources is still requiring some information to approve our project,” Pakala said.

Pakala says the Department of Fisheries and Oceans approved the plan, but they need the Province to sign off in short order, noting they are working with a tight construction timeline.

“We don’t currently have a projected approval date, so given the declining window of opportunity, we’ll most likely be looking at 2017.”

Pakala notes that Arbutus Point is experiencing community park losses year after year and the city would like to complete these project sooner rather than later.

The planned 35 metre-long erosion feature would compliment a much larger one installed nearby in 2008, which Pakala says has been effective.

He says the budget is $170,000 and would feature large boulders and other natural features.
