A grade 6 teacher at EJ Dunn Elementary in Port Alberni was arrested last week, charged with creating child pornography

Daniel Oliver made his first court appearance June 14, after allegedly chatting with a woman online, who he believed was a single mother of an eight year old girl, but turned out to be a police officer.

The conversation was reported to have been extremely sexual in nature, and Judge Ted Gouge called the allegations “horrifying”.

School District 70 Superintendent Greg Smyth says the 36 year old Oliver is still employed by the School District but is not in the classroom.

“Dan Oliver is a school district employee. We’re aware of the criminal charges against him and are cooperating with the RCMP and their investigation,” said Smyth.

“He is not in a classroom performing his teaching duties and we await the outcome of the criminal proceedings against him. We’re not commenting any further on the investigation.”

Oliver was released on bail Tuesday and will be living with his father in Port Hardy under strict release conditions.

His next court appearance is scheduled for July 13th.
