Banish the Boo’s!

Ahhh airing live, you just never know what may transpire.  And so it was on this week’s Your Life, Unlimited radio show that critical technical difficulties in the booth caused us to have the dreaded ‘dead air’ for a couple of minutes. While I was in the studio talking away to myself  – our audience heard….                            ….yeah, nothing.  Nonetheless, the show was salvaged by the time my guest chimed in, so skip ahead the first couple of minutes and then you can listen in to my conversation with Dr. June Donaldson (www.drjunedonaldson.com of www.emotionalsmarts.com)  …Your Life, Unlimited with Stephanie Staples and Dr. June Donaldson

She an author, coach, consultant, keynoter, mediator, arbitrator specializing in the area of emotional intelligence.

Two things I especially thought were helpful:

1) I loved the question she suggested that you ask yourself, “What is the fragile part of me?” Then keep digging for the ‘why’ of your answer. And finally, work hard to accept that part of you.

2) When something surprising, disappointing, hard, etc happens to you, train yourself to ask, “Wow, how do I feel about that?” Then you can start to unpack those feelings and deal with them proactively rather than reactively.

SMART!

Let’s banish the “Boo’s” and by that I mean, let’s stop beating up, second guessing or undervaluing ourselves and take ownership for who we are, what we are doing, how we are doing it and why.  There’s one small catch in this process, and it’s a small catch with big ramifications!  Before we can stop the above behaviours, we need to know in our authentic self, in our mind and heart that we are operating in an honourable, respectful and kindly way to both ourselves and others.   It means taking responsibility for our statements and behaviours so we create a peaceful, productive platform of living for us and those we care about.  Only then can we share our new found quality of life and quiet confidence with others.

Consider these tips to creating a lovely day, and perhaps a new beginning, in your world:

  1. If you know, down deep, you have hurt, humiliated or haunted another person – APOLOGIZE.  Get that guilt off your shoulders because you will not win by carrying negative behaviours and the related guilt.  All that happens then is the violation, your violation, wears you down and continues to create negative energy around you and your relationships.  Be courageous:  Say “I am sorry I said … or did …” You don’t have to explain why you said or did what you said or did.  You simply need to, in a straight forward, authentic and sincere manner say you are sorry.
  2. If you know of someone who could use a positive word, encouragement, empathy or love – GIVE IT TO THEM!  Show empathy and support by saying “I know things have been tough for you lately and I want you to know I am one of your greatest supporters” or “It saddens (frustrates, disappoints …) me to learn you are dealing with such a difficult issue and if you want to talk about it, I’m willing to listen”.
  3. Give thought to how you can LET GO WITH LOVE, of people around whom you cannot be at your best.  You don’t have to make any decisions or moves today:  just start the thought process of how you can either remove yourself from the life of people who appear not to support, respect and care for you OR how you might teach them how to treat you.
  4. HAVE FAITH:  stand up straight; open the palms of your hands to the sky; look up and say:  “I know I am being held in the palm of your hand and that things are working out just as they should be – and it is all good”.

Let’s put this into our “to be continued” file on peaceful, productive, prosperous and pleasant living!
