Sechelt First Nation says Samra to start work this month; Nanaimo Council unaware

NANAIMO — A Sechelt First Nation says Nanaimo city manager Tracy Samra will begin working for them this month, however City Council appears to be unaware of their employee’s situation.

The full news release from shíshálh Nation, obtained by NanaimoNewsNOW and dated Jan. 31, said Samra will “Start work in February” as the band’s chief administrative officer.

“We are excited about the opportunity to work with Tracy and are thrilled to have her on board,” chief Warren Paull said in the release.

Previously only the headline of the press release was available on the Nation’s website in a section only accessible by band members. The headline has since been changed to remove reference to Samra’s name.

Samra and the City have not responded to requests asking for confirmation on if or when she will leave the City and what that means moving forward.

Mayor Bill McKay said he and Council had not received any correspondence from Samra since she sent them an email earlier this week denying a media report she had been offered a job in Sechelt.

In an email, coun. Ian Thorpe said “Certainly I had not been informed of this by Ms. Samra and so far as I know neither had others. I am hoping to get more information today as I believe there may be more developments.”

No other councillors responded.
