‘It was absolute carnage:’ Island Highway closed for six hours after car crash

Dec 12, 2017 | 12:28 PM

NANAIMO — Police say it’s surprising no one received life-threatening injuries after a serious crash at the intersection of the Island Highway and Tenth St.

It happened at roughly 10:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 11 and shut down both southbound lanes for six hours.

“It was absolute carnage on the highway,” Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said. “That’s why the southbound lanes were closed for up to six hours. There was metal pieces scattered hundreds of meters on either side.”

Between eye witnesses and the traffic re-constructionist, O’Brien said it appeared a small car and a pickup truck crashed in the intersection as the truck was turning left onto Tenth St.
