Fashion fundraiser keeps Haven Society drop-in programs open

NANAIMO — More women and families in need will be able to get help thanks to a stylish fundraiser.

A $3,000 cheque was donated to Haven Society Tuesday night at a fashion show in Woodgrove Mall to cap their latest fundraiser.

The money was raised through the Style Team program, a two-hour session with a personal shopper for $20, and tickets for the sold out event.

Chantal Lambert, resources development and communication manager with the Society, said it was a fantastic experience being handed such a “substantial” cheque.

“This is a continuing fundraiser, since they already had their spring event, now this fall one and I imagine there will be another next spring,” she said. “We don’t often see that from third-party events, so it’s been really great for us.”

Lambert said fundraisers are critical for Haven Society and make up 20 per cent of their budget.

Including the previous spring event, $4,500 was donated to Haven Society through the Woodgrove program.

Lambert said the funds will go directly to their drop-in programs.

“It gives clients the opportunity to come in three days a week, meet with a counsellor and really discuss their needs and see how we can best serve them.”

Haven Society serves nearly 4,000 mid-island women and children every year who have, or are experiencing domestic violence.
