Nanaimo to host Pee Wee Tier 1 Provincial hockey tournament

Mar 17, 2017 | 12:38 PM

NANAIMO — Six hockey teams of eleven and twelve year olds from around the province will be in the harbour city to start spring break.

Minor Hockey is hosting the 2017 Pee Wee Tier 1 Provincials out of the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

The other teams that have qualified are from Victoria, North Shore, Abbotsford, Prince George, and Kelowna.

Nanaimo pee wee coach Sean Estabrook says it’s a big deal for his players.

“Lots of them it will be the only time they ever get to play in the provincials. They’ve been on the ice getting prepared so hopefully we can pull off a few wins,” said Estabrook.

The last time Nanaimo Minor Hockey hosted a major BC tournament was the Tier 1 Midget Provincials in 2011.

Estimates from Minor Hockey have over 200 people coming to Nanaimo for the tournament, which will run from Sunday until Wednesday.

Nanaimo plays in the first game against Kelowna at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The opening ceremonies are Sunday at 6:45 p.m.
