Don’t be a hero, say Nanaimo Mounties, after clerk breaks-up robbery

NANAIMO — No amount of money is worth your life.

That’s the message Mounties in Nanaimo are trying to drive home, after police say a gas station clerk and his son were injured while trying to fight off a suspect during an armed robbery.

RCMP Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong says a woman went into the Super-Save Gas-Malaspina Convenience Store on Wakesiah Avenue just before 10 p.m. Saturday, pulled out a weapon and demanded cash.

“The clerk’s son heard the commotion and came downstairs and got into an altercation with the suspect. He was able to pin her down while his mom called 911,” says Armstrong.

Armstrong says the clerk, his son and the woman were all left with minor injuries from the scuffle, with the clerk’s son needing a trip to hospital for some treatment.

In this case, Armstrong says, the clerk’s son initiated the confrontation, which is something police never recommend.

“I understand that people get frustrated and they’re worried about losing money, but it’s not worth it, it could cause you serious injuries, it could cost you your life. It depends how determined the suspect is to get away.”

The best course of action is to let your property go and then call police as quickly as possible, according to Armstrong.

She says 48-year-old Caroline Green has been charged in connection with the alleged attempted robbery. Armstrong would not say what type of weapon was allegedly used, noting that information is part of their investigation.
