Central Island athletes perform well at BC Summer Games

Central Island athletes were very successful at the BC Summer Games in Abbotsford last week.

The Vancouver Island – Central Coast region had the highest medal count with 170.

Jenn Houtby-Ferguson with Pacific Sport says success at the BC Games is often a gateway to bigger things.

“For many athletes this is their first multi-sport Games experience,” said Houtby-Ferguson. “We think of the Olympics coming up here in a couple of weeks as the epitomy of the multi-sport Games experience, but 44% of BC Games athletes go on to compete for Canada on the international stage.”

Houtby-Ferguson is quick to point out success on podium takes the contributions of local athletes, coaches and parents.

“This is just such an amazing experience for these athletes.  Tremendous for personal bests as well.  There’s lots of athletes who not only came home with a medal but many also who did their very best at a multi-sport Games.”

Nanaimo athletes won nine Gold, nine Silver, and nine Bronze medals while Parksville competitors took two Gold and three Bronze.
