Unprovoked Daylight Attack in Chemainus

Jul 20, 2016 | 3:14 PM

Police in Chemainus are asking people to be aware of their surroundings after a violent, unprovoked, daylight attack.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP Cpl. Krista Hobday says a 45 year old man was walking down Victoria Road in Chemainus on the evening of July 12, around 5:30, when two men got out of a vehicle and began shouting at him.

Within minutes, the pair started beating the man, in what police are calling a completely unprovoked attack.

Hobday says the men didn’t know each other and police have no idea what motivated the attack.

“Having said that, we don’t know if these two individuals are going to repeat this performance, there’s absolutely no way for us to know that,” said Hobday.

“All we’re saying to the public is be aware of their surroundings and hopefully by being on the offense, they’ll be able to discourage someone from doing this to them.”

The man was left with bruises and scratches to his face, neck and chest.

According to Hobday, there was seemingly no link between the victim and his attackers.

“There’s absolutely nothing that we understand provoked the attack. The gentleman that was walking down the street does not know who these two men are, he’s never seen them before and has no reason to believe they have anything against him or his family.”

Hobday says they’re investigating to see if the attack may have been racially motivated. The two attackers were white men, in their late teens or early 20’s.

They were driving what’s believed to be a late 1990’s or early 2000’s Chevy Blazer that was dusty and had a loud muffler.
