Philadelphia airport workers vote to strike during DNC

Jul 13, 2016 | 4:35 PM

PHILADELPHIA — Workers at Philadelphia International Airport have voted overwhelmingly to walk off the job during the Democratic National Convention later this month.

The union that’s trying to organize baggage handlers, wheelchair attendants and other workers says the 461-5 vote took place Tuesday night out of 500 on shift participating. About 1,000 employees work for subcontractors hired by airlines.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports (http://bit.ly/29CQ4aK ) workers are seeking better scheduling, clarity on sick pay, a more predictable disciplinary system and the ability to unionize.

SEIU 32BJ has been trying to unionize airport workers and area Vice-President Gabe Morgan says years of worker protests have led to wage increases to $12 an hour.
