NANAIMO — Two youth are in hospital after the minivan they were in was hit by a semi-truck.

The accident happened just before noon on Sunday, March 28 just south of the Aulds Rd. and Nanaimo Parkway intersection.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said the mother driving her four children southbound on the Parkway had to hit the brakes when two cars in front of her pulled off to the left due to mechanical issues.

“She hit the brakes hard to avoid the collision. As she went to pull off to the right into the slow lane, she was rear-ended by the semi.”

Two of the children in the car were taken to hospital, one to Nanaimo and the other to Victoria, with significant but not life-threatening injuries.

The accident hampered traffic for several hours with the highway closed, however detours around the scene were available.

O’Brien said the police investigation is continuing with mechanical inspections, drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors.

Anyone with dashcam footage from the time of the accident is asked to send the video to police to assist with the investigation.
