NANAIMO — Eight purposely set fires ignited at Brechin Elementary School this month has authorities increasingly concerned.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said the fires were small, with two of them started inside the school while it was open.

He said the most serious blaze in Brechin’s basement on April 3 caused $5,000 worth of damage and a lengthy evacuation.

“We are not taking this lightly at all,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW. “We are working in conjunction with the fire inspectors and with the school district…our fear is it could escalate and we want to put a stop to it as fast as we can.”
