Annual record show tops the charts in Nanaimo

NANAIMO — The organizer of the wildly popular Nanaimo Record Show figured putting the spotlight on the golden age of music was destined to fail.

Jack Tieleman couldn’t have been more wrong.

An estimated 15,000 to 20,000 primarily vinyl records from 25 regional dealers are expected at the fifth annual show Sunday, April 7 at the Bowen Park Auditorium from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“This year we decided to up the ante and go into Bowen Park with an expanded venue with way more tables and way more vendors,” Tieleman said.

He said the show doubled in size this year after a long wait list of store operators and hobbyists formed from the opening year.

He said a wide range of vinyl records, from various eras and price ranges will be available.

Tieleman said people may be surprised to know many current artists offer their work in vinyl, which he said leads to an authentic reminder of years gone by.

“The backlash of the MP3, which is a fine format for many people, is vinyl,” Tieleman told NanaimoNewsNOW. “It requires people to look after it, it has a certain quality of its own. People just love their records.”

Tieleman said a few CDs and cassettes will be on hand, as will memorabilia to complement more than 30 tables packed with vinyl records.

People adding to their grandparents’ collection and others eager to re-stock after selling off what they had helped pace surging global demand for vinyl records, Tieleman said.

“We’re just part of it, we’ve been lucky to have great stores in Nanaimo and access to records for a long time. There’s always been an incubator of record stores in town.”

Admission to the Nanaimo Record Show is $2, with proceeds from on-site concession sales supporting the Nanaimo Navy League and Sea Cadets.
