NANAIMO — A 17-year-old secondary student who suffered life-threatening injuries when hit in a crosswalk near Dover Bay Secondary School has died in hospital.

The Grade 12 student was hit after just stepping into the crosswalk at Hammond Bay Rd. and Ventura Dr. on March 6 shortly after school let out for the day.

A letter from the principal of Dover Day Secondary School informed parents of the student's passing.

“His passing will cause grief throughout our community and our thoughts are with his immediate family, his relatives and his friends,” the letter said.

“Each of us may be affected by this in different ways. Our school has put in place supports at school for students and staff to access throughout the day.”

There are now designated counselling areas at the school for anyone in need.

At the time of the incident, Nanaimo RCMP said the driver was cooperating with police. There's no new information on charges against the driver and the investigation continues.
