Supreme court trial underway after stabbing in Harewood

NANAIMO — A BC Supreme Court trial in Nanaimo is underway involving a stabbing in the city’s Harewood neighbourhood which left a man seriously wounded.

Matthew Dean Tremblay, 28, is charged with aggravated assault and assault after a 25-year-old man was stabbed in late March 2018 on Fifth St. outside the Sanala townhouse complex.

The indictment report showed the attack was against Brendan Lapoleon. 

Tremblay’s lawyer is expected to argue his client acted in self-defence.

The trial, to be heard by judge-alone, is expected to last two weeks.

Blood-stained clothes and a significant amount of blood were found in the parking lot of the former King Arthur Court complex following the incident.

Tremblay was originally charged with attempted murder, but that was later downgraded.

He was convicted in 2012 for brutally attacking a dog with a hammer in Nanaimo. Tremblay was sentenced to six-months in jail after he pleaded guilty to that offence.
