‘Do the right thing:’ family pleads for info after hit and run in downtown Nanaimo

NANAIMO — Police are searching for a suspect and a family is pleading for someone to come forward after a hit and run in downtown Nanaimo.

Nanaimo RCMP said a woman was in a crosswalk with a walk light, crossing at the intersection of Terminal Ave. and Commercial St. around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday when she was hit by a car.

Witnesses reported the vehicle, believed to be a smaller, white or silver two-door hatchback, was turning onto the highway from Commercial and continued northbound after hitting the woman.

Family of the 63-year-old woman told NanaimoNewsNOW she was hit from behind and struck her head on the ground after the impact. They said she suffered a significant ankle injury and received several stitches for a cut on her forehead.

“We are pleading for someone to come forward with any information on this incident,” the family said in a statement. “To the driver of the vehicle, please do the right thing and turn yourself in.”

Mounties confirmed the woman was in the crosswalk and wearing a reflective jacket at the time. Visibility was poor due to heavy rain and dark conditions Tuesday night.

Cst. Gary O’Brien said police found a car matching the description, a grey 2009 Toyota Camry, abandoned on Cliff St. near Terminal but there was no damage to it. He said officers will be following up with the registered owner, who is a person from the Lower Mainland.

“This pedestrian was doing everything right…At this time of year the weather is just atrocious at night. You have to be sure that when you are turning the crosswalk is clear,” O’Brien said.

Anyone with information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
