NANAIMO — A fatal accident in central Nanaimo has tragically claimed the life of a young boy.

Police confirmed the eight-year-old was riding his bike with his sister on Nelson St. around 12 p.m. on Sunday when they pedalled out of a driveway.

“Sadly they came out of a driveway and a truck was passing along and hit the youth,” RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW. “His injuries were significant.”

O’Brien said many bystanders did what they could while waiting for paramedics, but unfortunately the boy passed away in hospital.

Both riders were wearing their helmets at the time.

“We do not believe at this point alcohol, speed or drugs are contributing factors,” he said. “But of course everything is being looked at.”

O’Brien said the driver of the truck is cooperating with their investigation and remained at the scene of the accident.

Police are looking for two bystanders, a man and woman, who left the scene of the accident.

Victim Impact Services is helping family and bystanders. Grief counselling is also available for any students who attended school with the young boy.
